The Full-time Freelancer One Year Later

Today I just realized that it has already been over a year since I first started working as a full-time freelancer. So I took some time to look back on my journey and how it has been since I first started.

The beginning

I first started my web development career working as a programmer at a web development firm here in Cebu City. There I was able to learn more about web development and improve my skills. The education I gained from school was also important and actually gave me the motivation to choose this profession. Working in the company was great and it really helped me grow as a person and also as a professional. There were ups and downs but what mattered the most was the experience I gained. After almost 3 years, I took off and went home-based.

Working at home

The transition from working in an office to working at home wasn’t too difficult for me since I had already started taking freelance jobs before. Having a workable computer and reliable internet connection was all I needed to get things started. Working at home is never easy. There are a lot of distractions that sometimes lead to procrastination. The freedom of working in the comforts of your home could be misleading. This was something I had to cope up in the early days. As time went by I was able to manage my time and keep my focus on work. But of course working at home has its perks. You just need to have self-discipline and be responsible with your work.

So far so good

After a year I could say that it has been a good start for me. I’ve gained clients and more work. I’ve earned more than what I could have while working in a company and I have been able to do the things I’ve always wanted. I’ve learned new technologies which I applied on my projects as well. I’ve met some interesting people both clients and developers alike. Collaborating and learning with other people from across the world was also a good experience. But what really mattered the most to me was being able to spend more time with my family and I thank God for all the blessings He has given me.

Looking ahead

It has only been a year and I still believe that I have not reached my full potential yet. I will still continue to grow and learn new things everyday. I will improve my skills and explore new technologies to become a better professional in web development. I’ll continue to work with people everywhere and provide my services in an effort to help change the world and keep the web a better place for everyone.
